A general term for mammals in the family Phyllostomidae of the order Chiroptera. Many of them are so named because they have a spatula-shaped nose. They are found in the southwestern United States, through the West Indies, and in the tropical and subtropical regions of South America. There are about 51 genera and 151 species, and they are extremely diverse in terms of morphology, food, and habitat, and have evolved in parallel with various families in the Old World. For this reason, they are broadly divided into seven subfamilies, but some consider these subfamilies to be independent families. Forearm length is 3-11 cm, head and body length 4-14 cm, and tail length 0-6 cm, and some lack tails.
