He is one of the three great encyclopedists of the Mamluk period, alongside Umari and Karkashandi. Born in Kus in Upper Egypt, he studied folklore and history while earning his education by making copies of classic texts. He then served in the court of Sultan Nasir and held the position of head of various government offices, including the Military Ministry in Tripoli. His main work is the 31-volume tome Nihāya al‐Arab, a compilation of knowledge for government officials. It took him twenty-odd years to write it in his later years, and it consists of five parts: topography, humanity, animals, plants, and history.
