This mountain range occupies the eastern corner of the great mountain range that runs east-west through the center of the island of New Guinea, and its southeastern end connects to the Owen Stanley Mountains at the easternmost tip of the island. It forms one of the watersheds of Papua New Guinea, and is home to a number of high peaks over 3000m. Among these, Mt. Wilhelm (4694m) and Mt. Hagen (4000m), the highest peaks in Papua New Guinea, are well known. [Yoshioka Masanori] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
