A bird of the family Flycatcher in the order Passeriformes. The bird's English name, robin, is often translated as komadori, but although closely related, it is a completely different species. It is a small thrush, measuring about 14 cm in length, with reddish-brown upper body and chest and a whitish belly. Females are lighter in color than males. It breeds only in Japan, and inhabits islands such as Rishiri Island, Rebun Island, the Southern Kuril Islands, the Izu Islands, and Yakushima Island, as well as Hokkaido to Kyushu. In autumn and winter, except for some in the southern part, it migrates to warmer regions in the south. On the mainland and Yakushima, it mainly inhabits mountainous areas at an altitude of 1000 m or more, but on the Izu Islands, Rishiri Island, and Rebun Island, it inhabits near the coast.

スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥。英名ロビンrobinという鳥をしばしばコマドリと訳すが，近縁ではあるがまったくの別種である。全長約14cm，いわゆる小型ツグミ類で，体上面と胸は赤褐色，腹は白っぽい。雌のほうが雄よりも淡色。日本だけで繁殖し，北海道～九州のほか，利尻島，礼文島，南千島，伊豆諸島，屋久島などの島々にも生息する。秋･冬季，南部の一部のものを除いては南方の温暖な地方へ渡去する。本土および屋久島ではおもに標高1000m以上の山地に生息するが，伊豆諸島や利尻島，礼文島では海岸付近から生息している。
