Roman epic poet from c. 30 to c. 101. He served as consul in 68 and governor of a province in Asia Minor in 77, but in his later years he began writing poetry and wrote the great epic poem The Punic Wars, which is 12,200 lines long. It is said that he died of starvation after falling ill with an incurable disease in about 101. The Punic Wars is based on the Second Punic War, fought between Rome and Carthage, and was born in the tradition of Roman epic poetry that continued through Ennius and Virgil. The source material for the work was the historical accounts of Livy, and Virgil was a model for poetic technique. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
