...This category includes the following four types of Japanese kofun: (1) stone coffins decorated with reliefs or carvings, (2) side-entry stone chambers with stone barriers decorated with reliefs or carvings, (3) side-entry stone chambers with painted patterns or murals on the walls, and (4) side-entry stone chambers with reliefs, carvings, or painted paintings on the interior or exterior walls of the tomb. However, outside of Japan, a tomb is not considered decorated even if it has carvings on the stone coffin, and a tomb with murals or reliefs on the walls is called a mural tomb or a stone tomb with a picture, but is not called a decorated tomb. In Japan, decorated tombs are often the subject of particular interest because of the art historical interest in their decorations, as well as the importance of the regional characteristics of the four types, which are concentrated in the northern Kyushu region, mainly in the four prefectures of Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Oita, and Saga.
