An early Islamic mystic (Sufi), also known as Bastard al-Basāmī. He spent most of his life in the mountains of Tabaristan in Persia, where he gazed into his inner self through a life of strict asceticism. He was characterized by the dissolution of created nature, which ultimately nullified his own selfhood, in order to confirm the absolute oneness of God. In a state of ecstasy, he uttered the words "Glory be to me," an expression that only God is permitted to use, and was often criticized in later generations. Some scholars believe that he was influenced by Indian thought.
