Earth wax

Japanese: 地蠟 - ちろう（英語表記）earth wax

A type of mineral wax. It is also called ozokerite. Its main components are hydrocarbons of the _formula _CnH2n , and sometimes _CnH2n _{+ 2,} and its chemical composition is different from that of waxes obtained from plants and animals (esters of fatty acids and water-insoluble higher monohydric or dihydric alcohols). The refined wax is called ceresin. It is found in oil and coal deposits in Europe, the former Soviet Union, Egypt, and the United States, and the oil fields in the Borislav region of Ukraine are particularly famous. It is thought to be produced by the hardening and polymerization of paraffin oil in petroleum.

鉱物蠟の一種。オゾケライトozokeriteともいう。成分はC_nH_2n，ときにC_nH_2n＋2の炭化水素が主成分で，動植物から得られる蠟(脂肪酸と水に不溶な高級一価アルコール類または二価アルコール類とのエステル)とは化学的成分を異にするものである。精製したものはセレシンの名称がある。ヨーロッパ，旧ソ連，エジプト，アメリカなどの石油鉱床，石炭鉱床に産し，とくにウクライナのボリスラフ地方の油田が名高い。石油中のパラフィン油の硬化，重合などによって生じたものと考えられる。
