Gushu - Kashu

Japanese:
Gushu - Kashu

A county in Jiuquan City, northwest of Gansu Province, China. Formerly called Anxi. Located northeast of the Qilian Mountains, in the northwestern corner of the Hexi Corridor, it is the gateway to the desert region of the Western Regions. Permanent population 148,798 (2010). It was named after the beautiful melons it produced in ancient times. It is one of the oases formed by the Shule River, and produces wheat and cotton. During the Tang Dynasty, it was a key point on the Silk Road, along with Shazhou (Dunhuang) to the west. It is a junction between the route that goes northwest through Hami (Kumlu) and Turfan, and the route that goes southwest through the southern edge of the Tarim Basin. The Lanxin Line and Dunhuang Line (Liugou-Dunhuang) pass through the county.

The Yulin Grottoes (Wanfo Gorge) are located in the mountains to the south of the prefecture. In the surrounding Gobi region (a desert with only sparse shrubs), a typical wind-eroded landform (Yardang) can be seen. Suoyang City, located in the Yardang Wilderness in the southeastern part of the prefecture, is the remains of an oasis city from the Tang Dynasty, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014 as a component asset of the "Silk Road: Trade Route Network of the Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor" (World Cultural Heritage).
