A region in southern Italy. It has an area of 15,080 km2 and a population of 2.08 million (1994). Its capital is Catanzaro. It occupies the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, and is long and narrow from north to south. In ancient times, the region was called Bruttium, but it has been called by its current name since the 7th century (before that, the heel of the boot, which is the Salento Peninsula in Puglia, was called Calabria). It consists of five provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Reggio di Calabria, Crotone, and Vibo Valentia. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
