An island in the northern part of the Maluku Islands, eastern Indonesia. Local name Moro Island. Structurally it is considered an extension of the northern peninsula of Halmahera Island, separated by a narrow strait. It has an area of 1,800 km2 and a population of about 30,000. It is mountainous overall, with the highest point being Mount Sabatai (1,250m) in the south. The entire island is covered in dense forest, and is extremely rich in damar resin as well as timber. Sago palm and rattan are also found, and the inhabitants, the Halmahera people, are dedicated to collecting these and producing copra. インドネシア東部,モルッカ諸島北部の島。現地名モロ島。狭い海峡を隔ててハルマヘラ島の北半島に対し,構造的に同半島の延長とされる。面積1800km2,人口約3万。全体的に山がちで最高点は南部のサバタイ山(1250m)。全島が密林に覆われ,用材とともにダマール樹脂がきわめて豊富である。サゴヤシ,籐もあり,住民のハルマヘラ系民族はこれらの採集やコプラ生産に従う。大部分はイスラム教徒で,若干のキリスト教徒も交じる。
