An island in the northern part of the Maluku Islands, eastern Indonesia. Local name Moro Island. Structurally it is considered an extension of the northern peninsula of Halmahera Island, separated by a narrow strait. It has an area of 1,800 km2 and a population of about 30,000. It is mountainous overall, with the highest point being Mount Sabatai (1,250m) in the south. The entire island is covered in dense forest, and is extremely rich in damar resin as well as timber. Sago palm and rattan are also found, and the inhabitants, the Halmahera people, are dedicated to collecting these and producing copra.
