D-glucose is also called glucose and is the most representative aldohexose. It is found in large amounts in free form in sweet fruits, and in small amounts in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and lymphatic fluid of animals, but is found in large amounts in the urine of diabetic patients. It is a component sugar of disaccharides such as maltose, sucrose, and lactose, as well as the basic unit of polysaccharides such as starch, glycogen, and cellulose, and various glycosides. When carbohydrates are broken down in the body and converted into energy, they are first converted into glucose or glucose phosphate ester.
