Japanese: ヒスイ(翡翠) - ひすい

A gemstone name. Jade has had many names since ancient times, and green jade is called jade. Jade is dense and shiny, and mineralogically, most of it is hard jade. It has been prized by many peoples around the world since ancient times, and was especially popular in China. In Japan, it has been used as jewels for pendants and comma-shaped beads since the middle Jomon period. It is found in Myanmar, Siberia, the United States, Mexico, South America, and Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

宝石名。玉(ぎょく)には古くからいろいろの名称があり，そのうち緑色のものをヒスイと呼ぶ。ヒスイは緻密(ちみつ)で光沢があり鉱物学的には大部分が硬玉。古来世界の諸民族で珍重され，とくに中国で愛用された。日本でも縄文(じょうもん)中期以降に佩玉(はいぎょく)や勾玉(まがたま)として利用。ミャンマー，シベリア，米国，メキシコ，南米，日本では新潟県などに産出。
