Individual selection

Japanese: 個体選抜 - こたいせんばつ（英語表記）individual selection

One of the basic selection operations in plant breeding. It involves selecting an individual with the desired characteristics from a population of crops that contains individuals with different characteristics. In crops, harvesting seeds from an entire plant or selecting and maintaining the plant itself is called plant selection, while harvesting seeds from individual ears is called ear selection. In any method of plant breeding, individual selection is necessary at some stage. When traveling to remote areas in search of biological genetic resources and harvesting seeds, individual (ear) selection is carried out. In this case, it is necessary to devise a method of selecting several individuals to represent the growing population.

品種改良(育種)上の基本的な選抜操作の一つ。特性の異なった個体を含む作物の集団から，希望する特性をもつ個体を選び出すこと。作物では1株全体から採種したり，株そのものを選んで維持することを株選抜といい，1穂ごとに採種することを穂選抜という。どのような品種改良のやり方でも，どこかの過程で個体選抜は必要である。生物遺伝資源を求めて遠隔地へ行き，採種するときには個体(穂)選抜をしてくる。このときはいくつかの個体を採ることによって，生育群を代表するようなくふうをする必要がある。
