An Islamic shrine. It means "a place of pilgrimage." When a saint's tomb gains a reputation for miraculous powers, good men and women gather there and it becomes a shrine. Such shrines can be found all over the Islamic world, on the edges of villages, inside and outside cities, and on roadsides where nomads pass, and each one is linked to the indigenous pre-Islamic beliefs and customs. Religious events are held inside the shrine every Thursday evening, including the practice of zikr, in which the phrase "La ilaha" is repeatedly chanted like a Buddhist prayer, and prayers are made to the saint for help (madad).
