It means "beautiful singing." It is a 19th-century name for the Italian singing style that developed from the decorative solo songs advocated by Caccini and Peri around 1600, and emphasizes vocal flexibility, uniformity, and beautiful sound. In particular, arias in Italian opera make full use of bel canto. The Italian singer Pier Francesco Tosi (c. 1653-1732) called for the classical bel canto singing style, which required the mastery of breathing techniques, messa di voce (a singing technique in which the voice is stretched while gradually increasing in strength and then decreasing in strength), legato, ornamentation, and improvisation, but it fell out of use with Gluck's opera reforms.
