Fungus weevil (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒゲナガゾウムシ(髭長象虫) - ヒゲナガゾウムシ（英語表記）fungus weevil

A general term for insects in the family Anthribidae in the order Coleoptera. They are similar in shape to those in the family Curculionidae, but as their name suggests, many species have long antennae. The antennae of male black banded fungus weevils, Apolecta lewisii , are 4 to 4.5 times longer than their body length. Many species have a mottled pattern of hairs on their backs. There are over 2,000 species known worldwide, including small species with body lengths of 1 to 2 mm and large species over 20 mm, and about 100 species known in Japan. Adults are often found on dead trees and on fungi that grow on dead trees, which is where their English name comes from.

甲虫目ヒゲナガゾウムシ科Anthribidaeの昆虫の総称。形はゾウムシ科に似るが，その名のように長い触角をもつ種類が少なくない。クロオビヒゲナガゾウムシApolecta lewisiiの雄の触角は体長の4～4.5倍の長さ。背面に毛によるまだらな紋を有する種類が多い。体長1～2mmの小型種から20mmを超す大型種を含み，世界から2000種あまりが，日本からも約100種が知られている。成虫は枯木や枯木に生じた菌類などに多く見られ，英名もこれによる。
