Pygmy chimpanzee

Japanese: ピグミーチンパンジー（英語表記）pigmy chimpanzee

A primate ape of the orangutan family (illustration) that is slightly smaller and has a slender body than a chimpanzee. There are theories that it is a different species from the chimpanzee in the same genus, and theories that classify it as a subspecies. Pygmy means dwarf. Also known as bonobo. It lives in the tropical rainforests on the left bank of the Zaire River in Africa. Its entire body is covered with shiny black fur and it has reddish lips. It is easily distinguished from chimpanzees by the hair that protrudes like eaves above its ears, the bushy cheek hair, its black face from birth, and the lack of baldness.

チンパンジーより少し小さく，ほっそりとした体をもつ霊長目オランウータン科の類人猿（イラスト）。チンパンジーと同属異種とする説とその一亜種に分類する説がある。ピグミーは小人の意。別名ボノボ。アフリカのザイール川左岸の熱帯降雨林中に生息する。全身黒くつややかな毛で覆われ，赤みを帯びた口唇をもつ。耳の上にひさしのように突き出た頭髪，ふさふさしたほお毛，生まれたときから黒い顔，はげがないことなどで，チンパンジーと容易に区別できる。
