King who is said to be the founder of the Angkor Dynasty in Cambodia and built the foundation for the development of the dynasty. Reigned from 802 to 850. Posthumous name Parameshvara (meaning "supreme monarch"). Although much about his genealogy is unknown, he returned from Java in Indonesia at the end of the 8th century and reunited the divided country. In 802, he held an enthronement ceremony at Mahendraparbata (Phnom Kulen near the Angkor ruins) with Brahmin monks, and performed a ceremony that denied Javanese sovereignty. The king's footsteps cover almost the entire area of ​​present-day Cambodia, and he is said to have devoted himself to establishing bases throughout the country and relentlessly marching on campaigns.

カンボジアのアンコール朝の創建者といわれ,王朝発展の基礎を築いた王。在位802‐850年。諡号(しごう)パラメシュバラ(〈至高の君主〉の意)。その系譜などには不詳な部分が多いが,8世紀末インドネシアのジャワから帰国して分裂していた国内を再統一し,802年にマヘンドラパルバタ(アンコール遺跡に近いプノンクレーン丘)にバラモン僧を招いて即位式を挙げ,ジャワの宗主権を否定するなどの儀式を執り行った。王の足跡はほぼ現在のカンボジアの範囲にわたり,国内各地の拠点建設と容赦のない征行に明け暮れたといわれる。
