Born: November 10, 1894 in Aichi Died: August 10, 1977. Tokyo Buddhist archaeologist, Doctor of Literature. Called Rubble Caveman. Graduated from the Tokyo Higher Normal School, Specialized Course. Studied under Shimaji Daito, Miyake Yonekichi, and Takahashi Ken himself. 1925: Started working at the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum. After serving as head of the curatorial department, he became director of the Nara National Museum (1957-65). Served as a member of the Cultural Properties Protection Committee, a member of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Cultural Properties Protection Council, a council member of the Tokyo National Museum, vice president of the Japanese Archaeological Society, director of the Prince Shotoku Praise Association, a council member of the Shosoin Treasure Repository, and a member of the Horyuji Temple Preservation Committee. He is a founder of Buddhist archaeology, and for his contributions he was awarded the Asahi Prize in 1965 and selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1974. His major works include "A Study of Nara Period Buddhism as Seen from Sutra Copying," "A Study of Temple Sites in the Asuka Period," "The Basics of Buddhist Art," "Japanese Pagodas," "Collection of Statues of Prince Shotoku," and "A Study of Buddhist Archaeology."
