Ishida Mosaku

Born: November 10, 1894 in Aichi
Died: August 10, 1977. Tokyo Buddhist archaeologist, Doctor of Literature. Called Rubble Caveman. Graduated from the Tokyo Higher Normal School, Specialized Course. Studied under Shimaji Daito, Miyake Yonekichi, and Takahashi Ken himself. 1925: Started working at the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum. After serving as head of the curatorial department, he became director of the Nara National Museum (1957-65). Served as a member of the Cultural Properties Protection Committee, a member of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Cultural Properties Protection Council, a council member of the Tokyo National Museum, vice president of the Japanese Archaeological Society, director of the Prince Shotoku Praise Association, a council member of the Shosoin Treasure Repository, and a member of the Horyuji Temple Preservation Committee. He is a founder of Buddhist archaeology, and for his contributions he was awarded the Asahi Prize in 1965 and selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1974. His major works include "A Study of Nara Period Buddhism as Seen from Sutra Copying," "A Study of Temple Sites in the Asuka Period," "The Basics of Buddhist Art," "Japanese Pagodas," "Collection of Statues of Prince Shotoku," and "A Study of Buddhist Archaeology."

仏教考古学者，文学博士。瓦礫洞人と号す。東京高等師範学校専攻科卒業。島地大等，三宅米吉，高橋健自らに師事。 1925年東京帝室博物館に奉職。同学芸部長を経て奈良国立博物館館長に就任 (1957～65) 。文化財保護委員会委員，文化庁文化財保護審議会委員，東京国立博物館評議員，日本考古学会副会長，聖徳太子奉讃会理事，正倉院評議員，法隆寺保存委員などをつとめる。仏教考古学の樹立者で，その貢献に対し，65年朝日賞，74年文化功労者に選ばれた。主著に『写経より見たる奈良朝仏教の研究』『飛鳥時代寺院址の研究』『仏教美術の基本』『日本仏塔』『聖徳太子尊像聚成』『仏教考古学論攷』などがある。
