Earthshine - Chikyusho (English spelling)

This phenomenon occurs when the dark parts of the Moon appear slightly brighter around the time of the new moon. It occurs when sunlight is reflected by the Earth, hits the Moon, and is reflected again by the Moon before reaching the Earth. It is called Earthshine because it appears illuminated by light reflected from the Earth. It is brightest around the time of the new moon, but it is difficult to see because the new moon and the Sun are in almost the same direction. It is best visible to the naked eye on the dark part of the thin Moon around the time of the new moon, from lunar age 27, passing through new moon and reaching the next lunar age of 3 (crescent moon).

新月の前後に、月の暗い部分が少し明るく見える現象。太陽光が地球により反射され、それが月に当たり、再度月により反射されて地球に届いて見えることによって生じる。地球からの反射光で照らされて見えるので地球照とよばれる。新月のころが一番明るくなるが、新月と太陽がほぼ同じ方向なので見えにくい。肉眼でよく見えるのは新月の前後、月齢27から新月を通り、次の月齢3（三日月）のころの細い月の暗い部分である。
