Japanese: 大分[市] - おおいた
Oita [city] - Oita
A city in central Oita Prefecture. Established as a city in 1911. Prefectural capital. Facing Beppu Bay, it occupies the Oita Plain and the hills behind it. During the Nara period, the Bungo provincial capital was established in Furugō, and the city was formed at the mouth of the Oita River, where the Otomo clan lived in the early Kamakura period and the Matsudaira clan lived after the Edo period. After the railway was opened, it became a key transportation hub in eastern Kyushu, and industries such as textiles, lumber, and food developed. The castle ruins and Samurai Town became administrative and cultural districts, and the town houses became commercial districts. From Oita Port to Tsurusaki in the east, there is a coastal industrial zone, with large steel, petrochemical, spinning, and pulp factories. In recent years, advanced technology industries have also been established inland, and the electrical machinery sector has grown significantly. Agriculture is shifting to an urban type, with vegetable and flower cultivation being carried out. Fishing is thriving on the Saganoseki Peninsula. The Nippō-Kyūdai-Tohō Main Line, the Oita Expressway, the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, and National Route 10 pass through the area. It is connected to Ikata-cho, Ehime Prefecture, on the opposite shore by ferry boat. It is home to Oita University, Takasakiyama, Motomachi Stone Buddha (historic site), and the Oita Sports Park Big Eye, a soccer World Cup venue. In January 2005, Nozuhara-cho, Oita District, and Saganoseki-cho, Hokkaifu District, were incorporated into the area. It has an area of 502.39 km2 and a population of 474,094 (2010).
