Japanese: アイテル（英語表記）Aither

A Greek word referring to the "upper heavens" filled with light and splendor, the home of the gods, as distinguished from the lower "atmosphere (Aer)". In Hesiod's Theogony, Aither was one of the first male deities to emerge at the creation of the world, and is said to be the son of the night goddess Nyx and the darkness god Erebus, making him brother and sister to the day god Hemera. One version says that Aither married Hemera and became the father of the earth, the sky, the sea, etc., and there is also a legend that counts Zeus as one of his sons.

下方の「大気圏 (アエル) 」と区別し，神々のすみかである光と輝きに満ちた「上天」をさすギリシア語。ヘシオドスの『神統紀』では，天地創成時に最初に生じた男性神格の一つで，夜の女神ニュクスが，暗闇エレボスと交わって生んだ息子とされ，昼ヘメラと兄妹の関係にある。一伝ではアイテルは，このヘメラと結婚し，大地，天，海などの父となったともいわれ，ゼウスをその息子の一人に数える伝承もあった。
