Japanese: 光スペクトル - ひかりスペクトル

The distribution of light intensity given as a function of wavelength or frequency when light is decomposed by a spectroscope. It is often simply called a spectrum. Newton first observed that sunlight passing through a prism was decomposed into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet light, and gave this the name spectrum. Thus, the term was originally used for light in the visible range, but now it has been expanded to cover the entire range of electromagnetic waves, including radio waves, infrared rays, ultraviolet rays, and gamma rays. Furthermore, the term spectrum is not limited to electromagnetic waves, and any analysis of a specific quantity and an ordered arrangement is called a spectrum (spectrum).

光を分光器によって分解したとき，波長または振動数の関数として与えられた光の強度分布をいう。単にスペクトルspectrumと呼ぶことが多い。ニュートンが，プリズムを通した太陽光が赤，だいだい，黄，緑，あい，紫の色光に分解されるのを観測し，これをスペクトルと名付けたのが最初である。このように元来は可視域の光に対して用いられた語であるが，現在では電波，赤外線，紫外線，γ線など電磁波の全領域に拡張されて用いられており，さらに電磁波に限らず，ある特定の量を分析して順序だてて配列したものをスペクトルと呼んでいる(スペクトル)。
