A town in Saru County in southern Hokkaido. It occupies the mountainous area of the upper reaches of the Saru River and the lower reaches facing the Pacific Ocean. It is covered in forests, including the primeval forest at the source of the Saru River (a natural monument), and the lumber industry is thriving. In addition to rice, field crops, and dairy farming, it is also known as a famous producer of light horses. In March 2006, Monbetsu Town in Saru County was incorporated, and the town hall became the former Monbetsu Town Hall. 北海道南部,沙流(さる)郡の町。沙流川上流部の山地と,太平洋に面する下流部を占める。沙流川源流原始林(天然記念物)をはじめとする森林におおわれ,製材業が盛ん。米作,畑作,酪農のほか,軽種馬の名産地としても知られる。2006年3月沙流郡門別町を編入し,町役場を旧門別町役場とした。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。992.11km2。1万3615人(2010)。
