Matsumae [town] - Matsumae
A town in Matsumae County, Hokkaido, at the southern tip of the island. In the mid-15th century, the Kakizaki clan established their residence here, and in 1606 (Keicho 11), the Matsumae clan built Fukuyama-kan (now Matsumae Castle), after which the town flourished as a castle town for the Matsumae domain, a link between Hokkaido and the mainland, and a distribution center for seafood. After the Meiji era, the town lost its central role and transformed into a fishing town. There is the remains of Fukuyama Castle (historic site), and a breeding ground for streaked shearwaters (natural monument). 293.25 km2 . 8,748 people (2010).

Matsumae [town] [Masaki]

A town in Iyo District, central Ehime Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the Shigenobu River estuary between Matsuyama City and Iyo City. The main settlement was the castle site of Kato Yoshiaki from 1595 until the construction of Matsuyama Castle. Formerly a peddling town, the town became an industrial town in 1938 when the Ehime Factory of Toyo Rayon (now Toray) moved in. The town is served by the Yosan Line and the Iyotetsu Gunchu Line. Area: 20.41 km2 . Population: 30,359 (2010).

北海道松前郡,北海道南端の町。15世紀中ごろ蠣崎(かきざき)氏の居館ができ,1606年(慶長11年)松前氏が福山館(現,松前城)を築いて以後は松前藩の城下町として,北海道と本土の連絡地,海産物集散地として栄えた。明治以後は中心的地位を失い,漁業の町へと変貌を遂げた。福山城跡(史跡),オオミズナギドリ繁殖地(天然記念物)がある。293.25km2。8748人(2010)。

愛媛県中部,伊予郡の町。松山市と伊予市の間,重信(しげのぶ)川の河口左岸を占める。主集落は1595年から松山築城まで加藤嘉明の居城地。かつて行商を営んでいたが,1938年東洋レーヨン(現,東レ)愛媛工場が進出,工業の町となった。予讃線,伊予鉄道郡中線が通じる。20.41km2。3万359人(2010)。
