A town in Matsumae County, Hokkaido, at the southern tip of the island. In the mid-15th century, the Kakizaki clan established their residence here, and in 1606 (Keicho 11), the Matsumae clan built Fukuyama-kan (now Matsumae Castle), after which the town flourished as a castle town for the Matsumae domain, a link between Hokkaido and the mainland, and a distribution center for seafood. After the Meiji era, the town lost its central role and transformed into a fishing town. There is the remains of Fukuyama Castle (historic site), and a breeding ground for streaked shearwaters (natural monument). 293.25 km2 . 8,748 people (2010). → Related Articles Time Rules Story | Laxman Matsumae [town] [Masaki]Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
