Optical Information Processing

Optical information processing, or optical image processing, is a process that uses phenomena such as light diffraction and imaging to modify images or extract specific information. There are processes that use coherent light (interferable light) from lasers, processes that do not use interference using ordinary light, and processes that use electronic technology in combination. When light from a laser or other source is shone perpendicularly onto a striped pattern, the light that passes through it diffracts, and the finer the stripes, the greater the angle at which it bends relative to the optical axis. Coherent optical processing is an application of this phenomenon; in the example shown in the figure, diffraction occurs in slide-shaped image I, so the light pattern on plane F can reveal information about the roughness of the original image (the pattern on plane F corresponds to the spatial frequency spectrum of the original image).

光の回折，結像などの現象を利用して画像を修正したり特定の情報をとり出したりする処理を光情報処理，あるいは光学的画像処理という。レーザーなどのコヒーレント光(可干渉光)による処理，一般の光を用いた干渉を利用しない処理，電子技術を併用したものなどがある。レーザーなどの光を縞模様に垂直に当てると，これを通過した光は回折を生じ，縞が細かいほど光軸と大きな角度で曲がって進む。コヒーレント光学処理はこの現象を応用したもので，図の例ではスライド状の画像Iで回折が生ずるため，F面での光のパターンから原画のきめの粗さの情報がわかる(F面のパターンは原画の空間周波数スペクトルに対応する)。
