Chrysanthemum muscle

Japanese: 菊筋 - きくすじ

The name of a school of jiuta sokyoku. It refers to a lineage of Osaka jiuta sokyoku performers who have the character 'kiku' (chrysanthemum) in their surname or stage name. It began with Kikunaga Kengyo Taichi, who died in Bunsei 7 (1824) at the age of 83, and the school carries on the Nogawa school for shamisen and the Ikuta school for koto, but the school under his disciple Kikuchi Kengyo Baichi is particularly known as the Kikuchi school, and carries on the Keizan school for koto. It is also called the Kita school, as it was based around Sonezaki, Osaka. Kikuhara Kotoji was a representative figure in the Taisho and early Showa periods. His daughter Kikuhara Hatsuko is a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property as a recorder of classical performance and tradition.

地歌箏曲の派名。大阪の地歌箏曲家のうち，検校名または芸名の姓に菊の字を冠する系統の派をいう。文政7 (1824) 年に 83歳で没した菊永検校太一に始り，三弦は野川流，箏は生田流を伝承するが，その門下の菊池検校梅一以下の派は特に菊池派と呼ばれて，箏は継山流を伝承する。大阪曾根崎あたりを地盤としたことから北派ともいわれる。大正，昭和前期には菊原琴治が，その代表的存在。その娘の菊原初子は古典演奏と伝承の記録者として重要無形文化財保持者。
