Optical detector

Japanese: 光検波器 - ひかりけんぱき（英語表記）optical detector

A device that detects optical signals in optical communications. Generally, electrical carriers are generated by optical signals, and their movement is detected by an external circuit. Examples of this photoelectric conversion include the photovoltaic effect and photoconductive effect that utilize interband absorption in semiconductors, the photoconduction phenomenon from impurity energy levels, and photoelectron emission in phototubes. Photodetectors for optical fiber communications include photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes made of semiconductors. In the former, electron-hole pairs are generated when light enters the light-receiving surface.

光通信において，光信号を検出する装置。一般に光信号によって電気的キャリアを作り出し，この動きを外部の回路で検出する。この光電変換作用としては，半導体のバンド間吸収を利用した光起電力効果や光伝導効果，不純物エネルギー準位からの光伝導現象や光電管における光電子放出などがある。光ファイバー通信用光検波器としては半導体で作られたフォトダイオード，アバランシェフォトダイオードなどがある。前者は受光面に入射した光により電子･正孔対が発生する。
