Magritte - René Magritte

Magritte - René Magritte

Belgian painter. Born on November 21 in Lessines, Hainaut. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he produced works influenced by Cubism and Futurism, but in 1922 he encountered the work of de Chirico and switched to Surrealism. He produced his first Surrealist-style works, such as "The Window" in 1925. In 1926 he formed the "Mystical Society" with a group of Belgian Surrealists, and the following year he went to Paris, where he formed friendships with André Breton and Paul Éluard, and in 1929 he became an official member of the Surrealists. Many of his early works feature the technique of "dépaysement," which aims for a sudden encounter between things, and he created innovative poetic and mystical pictorial spaces by combining everyday images that at first glance seem unrelated, or by setting supernatural situations. Later, he produced works that explored the relationship between words and images, and between what signifies and what is signified, but Magritte's main themes and techniques were almost complete in the 1930s, and apart from a short period of time, there has been no essential change since then. He died in Brussels on August 15, 1967. His representative works include "The Territory of Arnheim" (1960).
