A city in the southeastern part of Aichi Prefecture, occupying the northern part of the Toyohashi Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. The central city area developed long ago as a town in front of the shrine gate of Toyokawa Inari (Myogonji Temple). In 1939, a naval arsenal was established and the city developed as a military manufacturing city. After World War II, industries such as railroad cars, automobiles, agricultural machinery, and optical instruments flourished, and in 1969, the Toyokawa Interchange on the Tomei Expressway was opened, which led to significant development. The city is served by the Iida Line, Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, and National Route 1. In the rural areas, vegetables are produced in abundance thanks to the Toyokawa irrigation canal. Goyu in the west is a former post town on the Tokaido. Kokufu is the location of the Mikawa provincial capital, and the ruins of Kokubunji Temple (historic site) are nearby. In February 2006, Ichinomiya Town, Hoi District, was incorporated, in January 2008, Otowa Town and Mitsu Town, Hoi District, were incorporated, and in February 2010, Kozakai Town, Hoi District, was incorporated.
