Oil fence

A fence or floating breakwater that is temporarily installed at sea to prevent the spread of oil leaks from tankers, etc. There are various types of fences, such as cylindrical polystyrene foam floats attached with weights and connected together, and curtain-like vinylon canvas with floats and weights attached to the top and bottom. The Marine Pollution Prevention Act requires owners of tankers of 150 gross tons or more, installers of facilities that can store 500 kl or more of oil, and managers of storage facilities to install oil fences.

海上で，タンカーなどから油漏れが生じたとき，広がらないようにするため一時的に設置する柵，または浮遊堤。具体的には，発泡スチロール性の筒形の浮体物におもりを付けて連結したものや，幕状のビニロン帆布上下に浮体とおもりを付けたものなど，さまざまなタイプのフェンスがある。海洋汚染防止法では 150総t以上のタンカーの所有者，500kl以上の油を保管することのできる施設の設置者および保留施設の管理者に，オイルフェンスの備付けを義務づけている。
