Kanto Public Affairs

Japanese:
Kanto Public Affairs
Also called Kanto Mikuuji or Kanto Onkuji. Duties imposed on the samurai by the Kamakura Shogunate. In a broad sense, it is synonymous with Gokenyaku, but in a narrow sense, it refers to economic duties excluding military service, and the narrower usage is more common. Duties were classified as temporary or regular, and were used for a variety of purposes, including repairs to the Imperial Palace, the Shogun's Palace, temples and shrines, and bonfires, as well as for Shogunate ceremonies and temple and shrine festivals. Duties were levied based on the number of public fields in the estate, and the eldest son paid the total for his illegitimate children, but around the time of the Bun'ei and Koan Wars, disputes between the eldest sons over the allocation of duties intensified. As one of the main foundations of the Shogunate's finances, the Shogunate feared a decrease in the Gokenin's estates, which were the basis for the burden, and took various measures, such as prohibiting the transfer of land to Gokenin women who married nobles or courtiers, and the sale of land to non-Gokenin.
