A city in central South Dakota, United States, and the state capital. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River. It has a population of 13,876 (2000). Agriculture, especially grains such as wheat, and livestock such as cattle support the city's economy, making it a distribution center for agricultural products. Many citizens have jobs in state and city public institutions. The town was established in 1880 as the western terminus of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and developed as a trading and distribution center for agricultural products. It became the state capital in 1889 when South Dakota became a state. Oahee Dam, completed in 1963, contributed greatly to the city's rapid development. There are many Indian reservations surrounding the city. [Kazuyo Sakuno] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
