A mystical sect that arose around Mount Athos toward the end of the Byzantine Empire. The name means "quietism." The goal was to create a state of inner serenity (hesychia) through physical control similar to Indian yoga and the endless repetition of Jesus' prayer, and to become one with God by seeing with the naked eye God's "uncreated light" (the light that the disciples saw at the Transfiguration of Christ). This method of training became popular among the monks of Mount Athos in the 14th century and attracted the attention of others. In the first half of the 14th century, Barlaam, a monk from Calabria in southern Italy who was educated in Western theology, fiercely attacked Hesychasmos on the grounds that he was suspected of heresy, sparking a major controversy.
