A syndrome in which infiltrative shadows are seen in the lungs on chest X-rays and eosinophilia is present in the peripheral blood. The name of the disease is an acronym for pulmonary infiltration with eosinophilia, and was proposed by W.H. Reeder and B.E. Goodrich in 1952. It is also called pulmonary eosinophilia (J.W. Crofton, 1952). It develops due to an allergic mechanism, and type III allergy is the main cause, but type I allergy is also thought to be involved.
