...It is also important militarily, and is home to the headquarters of NATO. Founded around 1000 BC as the Aeolian colony of Smyrna, it was destroyed by the Lydians in 627 BC, but was rebuilt during the Roman period and prospered as a commercial port and a base for Christian missionary work. In the 7th century, it was invaded by Arab armies, and from the 11th century onwards, it was fought over by the Turks, Genoese, Crusaders, and Timur's army, but in 1415 it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire.
