Name of thing - butsuruishoko

A collection of dialects. Written by Koshigaya Gozan (1717-87), a haiku poet from Koshigaya (Saitama Prefecture). Published in 1775 (An'ei 4). The five volumes are divided into the following categories: Volume 1 "Heaven and Earth/Human Ethics," Volume 2 "Animals," Volume 3 "Vegetation," Volume 4 "Food, Clothing, and Utensils," and Volume 5 "Language." The book lists 550 headings and the corresponding regional dialects. There are about 5,000 of them. Sometimes, ancient books are cited and detailed explanations are given. The preface includes a simple overview of Japanese dialects, and also notes that archaic words remain in remote areas. This is the first collection of dialects from across Japan, and was excellent in both quality and quantity, and was not surpassed until the Meiji and Taisho periods.

方言集。越谷(こしがや)（埼玉県）出身の俳人越谷吾山(ござん)（1717―87）著。1775年（安永4）刊。全五巻を巻一「天地・人倫」、巻二「動物」、巻三「草木（生植）」、巻四「衣食・器財（器用）」、巻五「言語」のように分類し、計550の見出し語の下にそれにあたる各地の方言を記す。その数約5000。ときに古書を引き、詳しい解説を付す。序文には、簡単な日本方言の概観もあり、また辺境の地に古語の残ることなども記されている。わが国最初の全国方言集で、質量ともに優れ、明治・大正のころまで本書をしのぐものがなかった。
