Kakuda Basin

A basin in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture. It is also called the Igu Basin. The Abukuma River flows east through the mountainous area on the border with Fukushima Prefecture, turns north as it enters the basin and flows through the center. In the past, the area was frequently flooded by the Abukuma River. It is home to Marumori Town, a cargo transfer point for Abukuma River shipping in the early modern period, and Kakuda City, the former castle town of the Ishikawa clan. The Abukuma Express runs from Fukushima Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line through Marumori and Kakuda to JR Tsukinoki Station.

宮城県南部にある盆地。伊具盆地(いぐぼんち)ともいう。福島県境の山地を東流した阿武隈川(あぶくまがわ)は、盆地に入ると北に向きを変えて中央を流れる。かつては、阿武隈川による洪水常襲地であった。近世の阿武隈川舟運の船荷積換え地の丸森町と、石川氏の旧城下町角田市がある。JR東北本線福島駅から丸森、角田を通りJR槻木(つきのき)駅へ阿武隈急行がある。
