An evergreen small shrub of the Xanthaceae family. Native to the Ryukyu Islands, southern China, and the Malay Peninsula, it was introduced to Japan during the Edo period. The stems are green and somewhat soft, with swollen nodes. The leaves are somewhat similar to those of tea, elliptical with wavy sawtooth, thick, dark green, glossy, and opposite. In early summer, the stem apex branches into 2-3 branches, forming a cone-shaped compound spike that produces many small yellow flowers. The flowers are unpertial but fragrant. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of the leaves to tea.
