Haanpaa - Haanpaa (English spelling)

Finnish author. After graduating from elementary school, he worked in forestry and agriculture while making his debut with his collection of short stories, Along the Highway (1925). He left behind many works that could be considered social criticism, depicting the near-barren lives of farmers and lumberjacks in remote villages in the north of Finland. His short stories in particular use everyday language a lot, are rough but full of sharp insight, and are written in a unique style that is concise, powerful, and satirical, creating a new genre called "Juttu" (short stories). He produced many works, and three volumes of his posthumous manuscripts were published, and his reputation as a talented author continues to grow. He also left behind masterpieces of social satire, such as The Wilderness and the Barracks (1928) and War in the Wilderness (1940).

フィンランドの作家。小学校卒業後、森林労働と農業に従事しながら、短編集『国道に沿って』（1925）でデビュー。北部寒村の農民や材木切出人の不毛に近い生活を描き、社会批判ともいえる作品を多く残した。とくに、短編作品群は、生活語を多用し、荒々しくも鋭い洞察に満ち、簡潔で迫力に富んだ風刺のきいた独自の文体で綴(つづ)られ、「ユットゥ」（小話）とよばれて新ジャンルとなった。その作品は数多く、死後にも遺稿集三巻が刊行され、創作力のある作家として評価は高まるばかりである。『原野と兵舎』（1928）、『荒野の戦争』（1940）など、社会風刺小説にも傑作を残した。
