This was a gathering of young writers who advocated anti-naturalism, and the name of the group was taken from Pan, the god of fauna in Greek mythology. In December 1908 (Meiji 41), the first meeting was held with Kitahara Hakushu, Kinoshita Mokutaro, Takamura Kotaro, Yoshii Isamu, and others who had left Shinshisha and based themselves in Subaru, along with young painters such as Ishii Hakutei. Their views tended towards aestheticism, praising exotic and Edo sentiments, and later, with the participation of members of the second Shinshicho and Shirakaba, it appeared as a major gathering of the anti-naturalist literary movement. The group's journal, Roof Garden (1909-10), was banned and ceased publication after just two issues, but the society itself continued until the end of the Meiji period, becoming one of the foundations of Taisho literature.
