The Independent

A high-end morning newspaper in the UK. It was launched in 1986 and attracted a lot of attention at the time as the first new entry in 131 years into the high-end newspaper market, which had been dominated by the "Big Three" of The Times, The Guardian, and The Daily Telegraph. The three people who founded the paper were Andreas Whittam Smith (1937-), Stephen Glover (1952-), and Matthew Symonds (1953-), who were reporters for The Daily Telegraph. The paper aimed to attract readers with a liberal, centrist editorial line. Its pages on international and domestic news, leisure, and art were well received, and it is said that young, liberal male readers of existing high-end papers switched to The Independent. Its circulation was around 270,000 in the year it was launched, but grew to 410,000 in 1989 and 1990. However, the paper's entry into the tough luxury paper market sparked competition in terms of reporting, page design, and price reductions, and in this increasingly competitive environment, circulation gradually decreased and the paper's finances became strained. The 1990s was a time of increasing managerial and financial difficulties for The Independent, which changed hands repeatedly and implemented severe restructuring. In the midst of this difficulty, in 1995, one of the company's founders, Smith, left the company, and in 1998, the Irish media company Independent News and Media (INM) took control. In 2010, INM sold the paper to Independent Printing Company, a company run by Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev, a father and son duo. Circulation has fallen from 220,000 in 2000 to 180,000 as of 2011.

イギリスの高級朝刊紙。1986年の創刊で、『タイムズ』『ガーディアン』『デーリー・テレグラフ』の「ビッグ・スリー」が固めていた高級紙マーケットへの131年ぶりの新規参入として、当時大きな注目を集めた。『デーリー・テレグラフ』の記者だったアンドレアス・ウィッタム・スミスAndreas Whittam Smith（1937―　）、スティーブン・グローバーStephen Glover（1952―　）、マシュー・サイモンズMatthew Symonds（1953―　）の3人が創刊の中心であった。リベラル中道の編集路線で読者をひきつけようとしていた。海外・国内ニュース、レジャー、芸術などのページは好意的に受け止められ、既存の高級紙の若くリベラルな男性読者が『インディペンデント』に乗り換えたといわれる。創刊の年の部数は27万部ほどだったが、1989年、1990年には41万部にまで伸びた。しかし、同紙の参入によって厳しい高級紙マーケットに報道、紙面デザイン、値引きなどの競争の火がつき、一段せり上がった競争環境のなかで徐々に部数が減り、財政的にも逼迫(ひっぱく)していった。1990年代は、『インディペンデント』にとって、経営と財政の苦境が深まった時代で、所有者が次々とかわり、厳しいリストラが実施された。その苦境のさなかの1995年、創業者の一人スミスが社を去り、1998年にはアイルランドのメディア企業インディペンデント・ニューズ・アンド・メディア社（INM）が支配権を握った。INMは2010年に同紙をアレグサンダーAlexanderとエフゲニーEvgenyのレベデフLebedev父子の経営する会社（インディペンデント印刷会社）に売り渡した。発行部数は、2000年には22万部だったのが、2011年時点では18万部に減少している。
