A 1,600-ton sloop-type ship built in the UK in 1934, it was purchased by the Danish Navy in 1949 for deep-sea exploration research. It is famous for its two-year circumnavigation of the globe and deep-sea exploration research that took place from 1950 to 1952. The Galatea's circumnavigation of the globe was led by Anton F. Bruun of the University of Copenhagen, and the research was carried out by a team of 11 researchers. They collected microorganisms from the bottom mud at a depth of 10,000 meters in the Philippine Trench, and fish, crustaceans, starfish, sea cucumbers, etc. from the deep sea floor at depths of 3,000 to 7,000 meters, proving the existence of life in the deep sea.
