Galatea - Galatea (English spelling) Galathea
A 1,600-ton sloop-type ship built in the UK in 1934, it was purchased by the Danish Navy in 1949 for deep-sea exploration research. It is famous for its two-year circumnavigation of the globe and deep-sea exploration research that took place from 1950 to 1952. The Galatea's circumnavigation of the globe was led by Anton F. Bruun of the University of Copenhagen, and the research was carried out by a team of 11 researchers. They collected microorganisms from the bottom mud at a depth of 10,000 meters in the Philippine Trench, and fish, crustaceans, starfish, sea cucumbers, etc. from the deep sea floor at depths of 3,000 to 7,000 meters, proving the existence of life in the deep sea.

イギリスで1934年に建造された排水量1600トンのスループ型船で,深海探検調査のため49年デンマーク海軍省により購入された。50‐52年の2年間にわたる世界周航深海探検研究により著名である。ガラテア号の世界周航は,コペンハーゲン大学のブルーンAnton F.Bruunが団長で,11名の研究者よりなる団員により研究が行われた。フィリピン海溝の深さ1万mの底泥より微生物を採集し,3000~7000mの深海底より魚類,甲殻類,ヒトデ類,ナマコ類などを採集するなど,深海にも生物が存在することを実証した。
