Hemingway, Ernest
Born July 21, 1899 in Cicero, Illinois
[Died] July 2, 1961. Ketchum, Idaho. American novelist. Full name: Ernest Miller Hemingway. After graduating from high school, he worked as a newspaper reporter for a while, then served in World War I, where he was seriously injured while serving in the field medical unit on the Italian front. After the war, he began writing while working as a reporter for the Toronto Star, and in 1921 he went to Paris, where he became acquainted with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and Ezra Pound. His The Sun Also Rises (1926), which depicts the hedonistic youth of the postwar period, made him a representative writer of the "Lost Generation." When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he went there as a correspondent and also supported the republicans. In addition to novels such as A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), and The Old Man and the Sea (1952, Pulitzer Prize), he was also known as a master of short stories using a hard-boiled style. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He loved hunting, fishing, and bullfighting, and lived an active life throughout his life, but he committed suicide with his favorite hunting rifle, reportedly due to depression. After his death, A Moveable Feast (1964) and Islands in the Stream (1970) were published.
