During the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, fields were set aside to meet the needs of the royal family (Gyungbo) including princes and princesses, and to meet the costs of ceremonies after the death of the royal family. During the Joseon Dynasty, the royal family bestowed fields on those related by blood or marriage to the king, but this became impossible due to the devastation caused by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion (1592-98), and in return, barren land was made tax-free and bestowed on the royal family. There were two types of royal fields: those with effective control over the land and those without tax, which only had the right to collect tax. The land was managed by a hereditary "gujo", and later it was sold and bought as a right. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
