The absolute pitch of a musical note is determined by the number of vibrations per unit of time (usually one second), but since tuning is concerned only with the interrelationships between notes, the absolute value of the number of vibrations is not important, and the ratio of the vibrations (pitch ratio) or its logarithm (pitch value) is used to express the tuning. Pure pitch ratios are obtained by harmonic division of the string length.
