Matteo Bandello
1485‐1561
Italian novelist. Born in northern Italy, he studied at the University of Pavia before becoming a Dominican friar. An adventurous and ambitious secular man, he was interested in politics and military affairs and served the Este and Sforza families. In 1526 he left the monastery to serve under French general Cesare Fregoso and fought against the Spanish army. After Fregoso was assassinated, he traveled to France with his widow and was given protection by Henry II. In 1550 he was appointed Bishop of Agen and devoted himself to scholarship and writing.

イタリアの小説家。北イタリアに生まれ,パビア大学に学んだのち,ドメニコ会の修道士となる。冒険好きで世俗的野心家だった彼は,政治や軍事に興味をもってエステ家やスフォルツァ家に仕えた。1526年僧籍を離脱,フランス軍の武将チェーザレ・フレゴーソに仕官,スペイン軍と戦った。フレゴーソが暗殺されたのち,その未亡人とともに,フランスに赴いてアンリ2世の庇護をうける。50年アジャンの司教に任ぜられ,学問と創作に専念した。
