Hanten (half coat, kimono jacket) - Hanten

Japanese: はんてん(半纏∥袢纏) - はんてん
Hanten (half coat, kimono jacket) - Hanten
A half-length garment worn over one's regular clothes. It is also written as hanten or kizanamatai. It usually has wide sleeves and is divided into casual wear worn at home and work wear for men. The former has been worn by common men and women at home since the Edo period over their everyday clothes, and is made of pongee or striped fabric, and some have black hanging collars. The collar is not folded down like a haori, and it usually does not have strings. One type of this is the nenneko banten, which is used when carrying a child on the back, and the round, cotton-filled kamenoko banten, and many are functional and practical wear.
