Takatsugawa

Japanese: 高津川 - たかつがわ

A river that flows north through western Shimane Prefecture and empties into the Sea of Japan. It is a first-class river. It is 81 km long and has a drainage area of 1,090 square km. The upper reaches are called the Yoshika River, and originate from Tanohara in Yoshika Town on the northern side of the Chugoku Sekiryo Mountains on the border with Yamaguchi Prefecture. It flows west and merges with the Tadeno River before turning north and flowing through Tsuwano Town and Masuda City before emptying into the Sea of Japan. River terraces are formed throughout Masuda City, and the lower reaches form the Masuda Plain. In the upper reaches of the river, wasabi is cultivated, and the area is famous for sweetfish fishing, and cormorant fishing is also practiced. A power plant is located on the Hikimi River, a tributary.

島根県西部を北流して日本海に注ぐ川。一級河川。延長81キロメートル、流域面積1090平方キロメートル。上流は吉賀川(よしかがわ)といい、山口県境の中国脊梁(せきりょう)山地の北面、吉賀町田野原(たのはら)に源を発し、西流して蓼野(たでの)川を合わせると北流に転じ、津和野(つわの)町、益田(ますだ)市内を貫流して日本海に注ぐ。益田市内では随所に河岸段丘を形成し、下流域では益田平野をつくる。上流の渓流では、ワサビ栽培が行われるほか、アユの漁獲で名高く、鵜飼(うかい)もある。支流の匹見(ひきみ)川には発電所がある。
